ANZ is committed to actively managing the environmental impact of our activities. As part of this commitment, we set clear, measurable targets to reduce our consumption of energy, greenhouse gas emissions, water and paper, and the amount of waste we send to landfill.
We have developed an Environment Management System (EMS) which provides a structured approach to assessing our operational impact on the environment and setting targets to improve our performance. Our EMS also governs how we measure and report on our progress.

In 2011 an external review of ANZ’s Environmental Management System (EMS) resulted in a number of improvements to ensure that it is both representative of best practice for our sector and has global application. A global EMS has now been finalised incorporating procedures and templates that can function and have relevance across multiple countries. The revised EMS, whilst consistent with ISO14001, is simplified for ease of implementation. In 2011 we worked with our staff in Singapore to pilot the new EMS. We jointly assessed the most significant operational activities of ANZ’s business in Singapore and its environmental impact, along with a review of applicable legal and environmental obligations. This resulted in the development of action plans for energy, waste, and paper. The Singapore pilot will be reviewed in 2012 and we anticipate expansion into other applicable Asian locations. |

ANZ is constantly seeking to improve the quality of environmental reporting. In 2011 we implemented Enablon software to support greenhouse gas accounting. This online tool allows us to easily capture and store greenhouse gas emissions data from facilities and activities around the world; from standalone ATMs in Australia to retail branches in Indonesia. Initially, we are using the new software to capture electricity data from the twenty-two most significant countries in which we operate. This will enable us to compare the energy and greenhouse gas intensity of our properties in these locations. We will be able to undertake monthly reporting, as well as specific analysis both quickly and easily. This will represent the first step to expanding ANZ’s environmental sustainability platform into many of these countries. In addition, it will enable ANZ’s legislative compliance to be more easily audited whilst providing greater transparency of our global environmental impact.

ANZ has monitored and reported environmental performance in Australia since 2004. Our performance was most recently assessed over a two-year period (2009-2011) for our Australian and New Zealand businesses, covering approximately 70% of our employees. You can also read about:
