ANZ has owned a technology business called ANZ Operations and Technology in Bangalore, India since 1989.
During the past 18 years, ANZ Operations and Technology has established a specialist capability in developing and managing software and technology for many of ANZ's systems. In recent years, it has also developed a capability to support ANZ's operations functions.
ANZ currently employs about 2,400 people in Bangalore in a range of information technology development, back office and support roles.
ANZ's presence in Bangalore reflects its development as a global technology centre with many of the world's largest companies, including IBM and Microsoft, basing key parts of their technology and operations support functions there.
ANZ will continue to develop its capability in Bangalore to remain competitive, drive innovation, improve service and manage costs.
As an international company, ANZ believes choosing locations overseas for some functions is appropriate provided jobs in Australia are growing, which they are.
ANZ however understands that customers want to be able to talk to staff in Australia about their banking and financial services needs. As a result, all customer contact roles, including call centre roles, will remain in Australia and New Zealand and ANZ will continue to provide award-winning service through our Australian Customer Call Centre.
The majority of the team in Bangalore are ANZ employees. They operate under the same ANZ policies and controls the Bank has in place in Australia, including high standards of privacy and confidentiality. Central records for our Australian customers are located in Australia and will remain located in Australia. They are subject to Australian privacy standards and, where there is a need to access customer data by ANZ staff in other countries, that access accords with those standards and ANZ's global information security policies.
ANZ has also made a series of commitments to its staff to help those that may be affected by these changes. This includes ongoing communication about proposed changes; retraining staff who wish to continue their careers at ANZ and giving them priority for vacant roles within the bank; and career counselling and support services to help others identify opportunities outside ANZ.
