From 3 March 2009, all Australian financial institutions including ANZ changed the way they charge "foreign" ATM fees, also known as direct charging.
The changes were in response to the Reserve Bank of Australia's request to the finance industry to introduce greater transparency to how ATM fees are disclosed to cardholders.
The main changes include clear visibility of fees during an ATM transaction and changes to how ATM fees appear on customer statements.

Importantly, there will be no change for ANZ customers who use ANZ ATMs in Australia. It's all part of our commitment to more convenient banking.
ANZ Access Advantage transaction account holders will continue to have unlimited ANZ ATM and EFTPOS transactions (including cash-out)1.
