Credit Cards

How is interest calculated?

Interest is applied to the daily outstanding balance, including purchases, cash transactions and prior months' interest and fees and charges. The daily interest rate for purchases and cash is calculated by dividing the annual percentage rate by 365.

What is my monthly account statement?

Your monthly account statement shows the transactions made on your credit card during the statement period. It will also show any fees or interest charged. You should check your account statement carefully and call ANZ if you have any questions.

Can I pay a lump sum to take care of my minimum payments and then pay nothing for the next few months?

No, the Minimum Monthly Payment (or more) needs to be paid each month. If you don't pay anything in a month, you might incur Late Payment Fees. Even if you make a payment before you receive your statement, you may still be required to pay a further minimum amount by the Due Date on your statement. If you are planning to go away for a while, you can set up a direct debit arrangement like CardPay Direct to ensure your Minimum Monthly Payment is paid. Or nominate someone to make the payment for you. If ANZ does not hear from you regarding a missing payment, we may be forced to close your credit card account.

What is a credit limit?

This is the amount you have been approved to spend on your credit card. From time to time there may be a debit made to your credit card account, which, if processed, would temporarily result in the outstanding balance exceeding your credit limit. ANZ has an Informal Overlimit service to help you in these circumstances. Please note an Overlimit Fee will be charged in these circumstances. Refer to the ANZ Credit Cards Conditions of Use for further information about this service. Ask us how you can avoid going over your credit limit by opting to have ANZ decline transactions (in most cases) that will take you over your credit limit at any time.

What is a cash advance?

If you obtain a cash advance from your card account when you do not have a credit balance on your card account, or sufficient credit balance to cover the cash advance transaction, a Cash Advance Fee will be charged. A Cash Advance Fee of 2% will apply to the extent that a cash advance exceeds the credit balance of your card limit.

How can I set up ANZ Internet and Phone Banking services?

To register for ANZ Phone or Internet Banking call 13 22 73 and obtain a customer registration number(CRN) and telecode. Then follow the prompts to change your auto-generated telecode to a telecode number of your choice, between four to seven digits long. To register for ANZ Internet Banking, visit www.anz.com and register using your (CRN) and Telecode. You will then be prompted to select a password.

For more detailed information on how credit cards and credit card repayments work, please refer to the 'How Credit Cards Work' brochure available at any ANZ branch.

When do overlimit or late payment fees apply?

From 15 December 2009, in relation to credit cards, an Overlimit Fee will be charged to your account when you make a purchase or cash advance, or have a recurring payment, which, if processed, would temporarily cause your outstanding balance to exceed your credit limit. In this situation, ANZ may allow the debit to be processed as an Informal Overlimit amount subject to certain conditions being met (refer to Credit Card Conditions of Use for further details), A Late Payment Fee will be charged if you do not pay at least the minimum amount as indicated on your monthly statement by the Due Date. In either case a fee of $20 may be added to your account. If you receive a Government benefit and hold an ANZ Access Basic account, no Overlimit or Late Payment Fees will apply. For information on eligibility for an ANZ Access Basic account please go to anz.com or your local ANZ branch.

ANZ only charges one Overlimit Fee in any one monthly statement cycle, but any over limit amounts are payable immediately. When you receive your credit card, we'll make sure you have clear and simple information about the fees that apply. For more information on how you can minimise fees visit anz.com/simplify.

Can I make a bill payment with my credit card?

Bill payments from your credit card can be processed as either a purchase or a cash advance. This is dependent upon how the biller is set up with the BPAY® billing service. The biller has the option of accepting a credit card as a method of payment. If the biller chooses to accept, the bill payment is processed as a purchase. If the biller does not accept credit card payments, ANZ may allow you to make the payment from your credit card (when sufficient funds are available). If you choose to proceed with the payment, it will be processed as a cash advance. Relevant fees and interest will apply from the date of the cash advance.

How does the interest free period work?

For example, if your card has a 44-day interest free period, the interest free day period consists of your 30-day statement cycle, then 14 days to the due date. If your previous statement balance (excluding any repayments on promotional plans not yet due) was paid in full by the due date and you make a purchase made on the first day of your next cycle, it will attract 44 interest free days if the closing balance of the next statement is paid in full.

What is a Late Payment Fee?

A Late Payment Fee is charged when any amount shown as due on your statement of account, including any Minimum Monthly Payment has not been paid by the “Due Date” shown on that statement.

What is an outstanding authorisation?

An outstanding authorisation is when the estimated value of a purchase (eg hotel stay) has been held for a period of up to an estimated six days to allow the merchant to process the transaction. It can also be used as a security measure for transactions such as hotel stay or car rental. In this case, after the six days the amount drops off the system. This would reduce the cardholder's available credit, but not the balance owing on the card.

My card expires this month how do I get a new card?

Credit cards expire at the end of the month and are re-issued prior to the 25th day of the month of expiry.

Can I credit my own funds into the credit card and still accrue points on purchases?

Yes, you still accrue points on any eligible purchase.
