How the biggest 200 companies are chosen

ANZ does not make decisions about the list of the biggest 200 companies on the Australian share market – this is independently managed by Standard and Poor’s (a global financial ratings agency) and the Australian Stock Exchange (S&P/ASX 200 Index).

To make the list, a company must

1. Be listed on the Australian Stock Exchange
2. Be among the 200 highest value public companies in Australia
3. Have at least 30% of its shares available for purchase by the public
4. Be actively and regularly traded on the share market.

Are all 200 companies represented equally within the S&P/ASX200 Index?

The companies do not have equal representation in the Index. Instead, the Index measures company size based on the company's market capitalisation (value).

How often is the S&P/ASX200 Index reviewed?

The list of the biggest 200 companies on the Australian share market changes regularly, usually when each company’s value changes in terms of its share price.

Companies in the lower positions (199, 200 etc) can be removed and replaced with other companies that have overtaken them. Generally, the biggest companies are unlikely to move out of the list except where they are involved in a merger, take over, or subject to a significant change in circumstances.
