Welcome. Applying for an account with ANZ in Australia is simple and secure.

Eligibility criteria

In order to apply for an ANZ Access Advantage or ANZ Online Saver account, each applicant must:

  • be 16 years of age or over
  • be a new customer currently residing outside of Australia - who will be available to be identified in Australia upon arrival
  • intend to migrate to Australia within 1 year of submitting the application
  • use the account for personal use only (not to be used as a business account)

What type of card am I eligible for?

  • Customers 18 years of age or over will be eligible to receive an ANZ Access Visa Debit card
  • Customers under 18 years will be eligible to receive an ANZ Access card

We will email you your new account number as soon as your application has been processed. You will be able to deposit funds immediately; however you will be unable to withdraw your funds until you visit an ANZ branch in Australia to confirm your identity. The personal details that you enter on these forms must be the same as they appear on your passport.


When you arrive in Australia

You will need to visit an ANZ branch to complete the Customer Identification Process. Please bring your passport (stamped or accompanied by a boarding pass or travel ticket) with you to satisfy the identification requirements within 6 weeks of arrival. If you visit an ANZ branch after six weeks of arriving in Australia, you will need to bring additional identification documentation with you, e.g. Driver's licence and passport.

You will also need to provide ANZ with your Australian address and contact details.

Once you have completed the Customer Identification Process, you will be able to withdraw funds from your ANZ account. We can also order you an ANZ Access Visa Debit card if you are eligible, and assist you to complete ANZ Phone Banking and ANZ Internet Banking registration.

If you open a joint account, both applicants must confirm their identity in Australia before full account access is granted.

You will be opening an ANZ Access Advantage account

If your application is successful, an ANZ Access Advantage account will be opened for you before arriving in Australia. Please indicate if you would also like an ANZ Online Saver.

Important Tax Information

Anyone who receives income from Australia may be subject to tax in Australia and may require an Australian Tax File Number (TFN). For more information, you should visit the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website or seek independent tax advice.

While you are living outside of Australia and have advised us of your current overseas address, we are obliged to deduct non-resident withholding tax from any interest credited to you at the relevant withholding tax rates. Visit the ATO website for more information on "Investing in Australia" or seek independent tax advice.

Once you have moved to Australia and have advised us of your Australian address, though not compulsory to do so, you should supply your TFN to ANZ. If you do not quote a TFN, ANZ is obliged to deduct TFN withholding tax at the highest marginal tax rate (plus Medicare Levy) from any interest credited to you unless you are in an exempt category. If you are in an exempt category, you should let us know. If you do not have a TFN, you should contact the ATO on 13 28 61 (within Australia) or +61 2 6216 1111 (from overseas) to have an application form sent to you, or you can apply over the internet. Where TFN withholding tax has been deducted from your interest, you are usually entitled to claim a credit at the end of the financial year in your Australian income tax return.
