Caravan and camping

So many of us have great memories of camping and caravan holidays as kids. If you are keeping those memories alive and making new one then the following information could help.

Where to stay

The choices of where to stay when you’re camping or caravanning are almost endless. The Australian landscape is littered with caravan parks of all description, from council owned and operated facilities to privately operated parks that at times are virtual resorts.

And if you’re set up with a generator or solar power you mightn’t even need to stay in a park as there are plenty of sites which allow free camping throughout the country.

Some things to consider:

  • Off peak travel is usually cheaper.
  • You may want to join a motoring association or caravan park group – this can save money but make sure the group has parks available in your desired locations.
  • You may not even need a caravan or tent, many parks have on site accommodation.
  • National Parks can be great locations, at times you can stay free or for a small fee. However, there are restrictions, for example you can’t take a domestic dog into a national park.
  • If you’re heading off the beaten track make sure you leave detailed instructions of where you’re going and when you should be expected back.
  • Take adequate food, water and shelter.
  • Ensure you have adequate communication equipment (your mobile phone won’t work everywhere).
  • Have a back-up power source (generator or solar).
  • Consider an Electronic Positioning Radio Beacon (PERB) – these devices are becoming smaller and cheaper and could save your life if you’re lost and in trouble.

Your first destination should be Tourism Australia. It has links to the local tourism boards in each state or territory and a heap of information to help you stay on the road safely and enjoy your break.

How to travel

This comes down to more than just a choice of tent, camper, caravan or motor home. It will depend on your budget, your preferred way to travel and where you want to go. You may like to visit the Caravan and Camping show in your state to check out the latest and greatest. Suffice to say, these days “roughing it” isn’t quite what Burke and Wills faced.

We won’t examine the pros and cons of each option but here are some things to consider:

  • Do you plan to head off-road? If so, will a caravan or motor home be capable of going where you want to go?
  • How keen are you on setting up your campsite each time you move? Motor homes and caravans are generally easier to set up.
  • If you’re using a motor-home, how will you travel from your base-camp (you may decide to tow a car or bike trailer)?
  • How keen are you on roughing it? Do you want to sleep under the stars, have a warm shower each night or both.

Why not try before you buy. Rent your preferred mode of accommodation and see how you like it.
